From Brian Zempel of Wheaton, IL: How do you keep a good round going without tightening up in some manner?
At any level there is a comfort zone. It comes down to what you believe of yourself and your golf ability. I have been working a lot with Dr. Bob Rotella on the mental side of the game and I constantly reread his books or listen to his tapes. One of my favorite things I learned from him is to think I am on a hot streak when I am making birdies and to think that it is a fluke when I am making bogeys. If a person makes three birdies to start a round, the rational thing to think is that it has to end soon. However, the best way to keep that round going is to think you are on a hot streak and enjoy the ride while it lasts. Conversely, if you start with three bogeys, you should think to yourself that my allotment of bogeys is used up for the day and there is no way you will make another one.
And to be honest, our minds all wander during a round of golf. So the better you can just try to hit your ball at your target each time and totally accept the result, the better your score will be.
